Steps to keep your tree fresh for Christmas day

Setting up your tree is easy peasy, but it does help if you have at least 2 sets of hands. All you need to get started is your tree and something to put it in.

  1. When you get home with your Christmas tree, cut 2cm off the bottom of the trunk with a pruning saw. This will refresh your tree so it can drink up as much water as possible. It’s just like looking after cut flowers.
  2. If you aren’t ready to put your tree up straight away, then you can stand it up in a bucket of water. Try to keep it out of the sun and wind.
  3. Choose a spot for your tree away from sunny windows. This will prevent it drying out before Christmas day.
  4. Prepare your Christmas tree stand. We recommend a purpose-built Christmas tree stand, but you can also use a sturdy bucket with rocks or bricks to hold up the tree. Never use dirt or sand.
  5. Stand your tree up in the stand or bucket, and then tighten the screws of your purpose built stand (or adjust the rocks/bricks in your bucket stand) until your tree is straight.
  6. Fill up the stand or bucket with tap water. Be sure to check the level regularly, and keep it topped up. If the water level drops below the bottom of the trunk then it might seal up with sap and the tree will dry out.
  7. Time to decorate! Enjoy!
